The recommended daily allowance of salt is roughly this.

Now, of course, please don’t take this picture as license to go crazy with the salt shaker.

I merely meant it to be a useful imagining of the abstract numbers we get quoted on our nutrition labels.

In other words, the raw figures are:

    2g of sodium, stated as 2300mg by the FDA (U.S.)
    The discrepancy is explained by the following: Salt = sodium x 2.5

    Nice picture. But there is a puzzle, The photograph is marked “2g of salt” and it looks like 2 grams to me, rather than six grams. But what does it represent? If 2g of sodium needs 6g of salt, it is not an image of the daily allowance, is it?

    Maybe you should say, straight out, that it is one third of the UK daily allowance, if that is the case.

    Following through the logic, it does appear the picture is inconsistent with the figures, and hence the correction is merited.

    Good picture though! So what is the answer? That it is 2g? And one third of the daily allowance?
    The Feds says 1 tsp is enough per day, and says that is 2.3 gms. That’s at http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/dga2005/document/html/chapter8.htm The American Heart Association says 3 grams which is 1.5 teaspoons of salt and that the average American ingests two to four times that much. More is meant to be bad for you but the key factor I happen to know is really sodium/potassium balance, with people getting problems with high blood pressure if they don’t get enough potassium to balance all the sodium.

    Better to just eat good preferably food you cook yourself and avoid packaged and industrial farm stuff and you wont have a problem. What do you say?!

    The best salt in the world is the pink salt from the Himalayas imported here from Pakistan. MMMMM scrumptious!
